Hassan Malik, PhD, CFA
Hassan Malik, PhD, Senior International Strategist, is responsible for the firm’s coverage of emerging and frontier markets through the Emerging Markets Focus publication as part of the Global Strategy team led by NDR Chief Global Investment Strategist, Tim Hayes.
Prior to joining NDR, Hassan advised macro and equity long/short hedge funds on emerging market investments at research firm Greenmantle, LLC. He previously spent several years working in Moscow for Troika Dialog, Russia’s largest investment bank, and at Copperstone Capital, a local hedge fund. He began his career in equity research at J.P. Morgan in New York, focusing on transport and marine oil services companies in North America and Europe.
Hassan is a financial historian, and earned his AB with honors at the University of Chicago and his AM and PhD at Harvard University. His forthcoming book on the largest sovereign default in history, Bankers and Bolsheviks: International Finance and the Russian Revolution, 1892-1922, is under contract with Princeton University Press.
Hassan has a long-running interest in emerging and frontier markets, having lived in Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Venezuela, Malaysia, and Russia, and spent shorter stints in Pakistan, Romania, and Turkey. He is fluent in Russian, Spanish, and Urdu/Hindi, and conversant in French and Italian.
