Are investors unwittingly exposed to autocracy risk in their portfolio?
Geopolitical tensions fostered by autocracies have increasingly impacted financial markets in recent years.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a case in point, with more than 1,000 companies listed outside of Russia forced to close their operations in Russia, resulting in losses exceeding US$250 billion. Geopolitical risks, which have often been neglected in investment decisions in the past, should now be central in portfolio construction: ignoring them can prove very costly.
TOBAM recently developed an investment approach, based on original research on portfolio exposure to authoritarian countries. Yves Choueifaty, TOBAM President and founder, will detail the strategy, which aims to generate perrfeormance my minimizing the direct exposure, but also more importantly the indirect exposure to autocraties (e.g. underweighting non-Chinese stocks with significant exposure to China).
