The Geoeconomic Decade
CFA Society Germany meets CFA Institute Research Foundation
In 2021, the CFA Institute Research Foundation published a monograph titled “Geo-Eeconomics: The Interplay between Geopolitics, Economics, and Investments.” In it, academic research on how geopolitical events influence financial markets was reviewed, in addition to investigating four geopolitical trends that could influence the 2020s.
Since then, geopolitical risks have increased in frequency and severity alike. In this presentation, as well as the accompanying CFA Institute Research Foundation Brief, the defining trends in geoeconomics in the 2020s will be discussed. We look at the rivalry between the US and China and the geoeconomic impact of climate change and the energy transition. Finally, we discuss a more recent development: the rising risk premium on US Treasuries and theory that the US dollar could increasingly be replaced by alternative currencies.
